What is somatic coaching?
Somatic coaching focuses on the emotions and traumas stored in the body. As a somatic coach, you help clients get out of their heads and reconnect with their bodies.
When they improve the mind-body connection, your clients can:
- Heal from past trauma
- Less stress and tension
- Boost their self-confidence
- Process emotions fully
- Improve their relationships
- Build a deeper, more meaningful connection to themselves
And somatic coaching works.
Research shows that people who have an increased awareness of their posture and movements can create a more positive emotional experience by making specific changes to their body language. Another study shows that somatic experiencing can help address negative emotional effects and symptoms of trauma.
Ultimately, somatic coaching is about creating meaningful, long-lasting transformation.
Take my former client Briana. She helps people overcome their relationship attachment patterns through arts therapy and somatic practices.
Another client, Summer, started a spiritual coaching business to guide her clients toward holistic healing—mind, body, and soul.
Here’s the best part: Because somatic coaching delivers such powerful results, people are more than willing to invest in it. 82% of consumers say they see wellness as a priority in their lives.
So while you get to work with something you love–and make an impact in other people’s lives–you also create a fulfilled, happy, and financially free life for yourself. And if you decide to pursue online coaching, you can use your unique gifts and skills to replace your salary and stay in control of your own time.
The best part:
You’re close to making it happen. The internet is full of your ideal clients who can’t wait to start working with you to achieve their goals.
Now, how exactly do you deliver these transformative results? Let’s dive into what you’ll be doing as a somatic coach.
What does a somatic coach do?
Somatic coaching, or embodiment coaching, goes far beyond talking—it’s about helping clients heal and grow by addressing their emotions and the physical sensations stored in their bodies.
As a somatic coach or somatic practitioner, you’ll guide clients to:
- Develop greater body awareness
- Release physical and emotional tension
- Process and understand their emotions
- Improve their overall well-being and resilience
Through specific techniques, your role is to help clients uncover the root causes of what’s holding them back. This could be:
- Stress
- Trauma
- Or deeply ingrained patterns they’ve carried for years
For example, let’s say a client comes to you feeling anxious but can’t pinpoint why. Your job would be to guide them to notice where that anxiety shows up in their body.
Is it tightness in the chest? A knot in the stomach? Once identified, you’d work together to release it.
What’s the difference between somatic coaching vs somatic therapy?
Somatic coaching is not the same as therapy. You see, somatic coaching and somatic therapy have completely different goals, approaches, and target audiences. Both focus on the body-mind connection, but use different methods.
Somatic coaching is a form of life coaching. The focus is on the future and taking action and a lot of emphasis is put on developing new skills and habits. Somatic coaching clients are looking to improve themselves.
Somatic therapy addresses and heals emotional, psychological, or trauma-related issues. The focus is on past trauma and dysfunction. Therapy clients often deal with mental health challenges and trauma.
If you want to learn how to become a somatic therapist instead of a coach, this guide is for you.
Now you know what somatic coaching is–what are some exercises you can use to help your clients? Let’s take a look.
What exercises are used in somatic coaching?
Somatic coaching exercises unlock a level of healing that traditional talking therapies often can’t reach. Here are eight powerful exercises you’ll likely use in your coaching practice:
- Mindfulness and meditation: Help clients focus on the present moment and tune into their body’s sensations.
- Breathing techniques: Teach diaphragmatic (belly) breathing to improve emotional regulation and reduce stress.
- Body scanning: Lead clients through a body scan to identify and release areas of tension or pain.
- Biofeedback: Use tools like heart rate monitors or muscle tension trackers to help clients see how their bodies respond to stress.
- Emotional mapping: Help clients pinpoint where emotions show up in their bodies, strengthening the connection between feelings and physical sensations.
- Movement: Use physical movement to release trapped energy and emotions.
- Emotional resilience exercises: Teach clients how to build their capacity to handle emotions in a healthy way.
- Grounding: Use grounding techniques, such as focusing on the sensation of their feet on the floor, to keep clients present and centered.
Other approaches include:
- Body-mind centering
- Feldenkrais
- Laban movement analysis
- Dance, yoga, Pilates, and even Aikido
By combining several techniques, you’ll develop a unique coaching style that works best for your specific audience.
Wondering how to turn this into a career? Then let’s dive into how you can become a somatic coach.
How to become a certified somatic coach
Becoming a somatic practitioner doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
In fact, the entire process can be broken down into five simple steps. And in this section, we’ll walk through each one so you can see exactly how to turn your passion into a fulfilling career.
Let’s dive in!
1. Find a niche
Before you dive in, ask yourself this simple question:
WHO do I want to help, and with WHAT?
The more specific you get with your niche, the easier it becomes for your dream clients to find you—and for you to deliver results that truly change their lives.
Here’s an example: I help busy entrepreneurs build businesses to leave their 9-5 jobs because I’ve been there myself. I understand the challenges they face and exactly how to overcome them. That’s what makes my coaching unique and effective.
And the results? They speak for themselves:
As a somatic coach, your niche might focus on niches like:
- Stress relief
- Relationships
- Building self-confidence
The key is to lean into your own experience and get as specific as possible. When you understand your clients’ struggles inside and out, you can deliver incredible value.

Once you’ve nailed down your niche, the next step is deciding whether you want to get certified. Let’s talk about that next.
2. Get certified
Let’s be clear: You don’t need a certification to start coaching.
Unlike somatic therapy, which requires licensing and formal education, coaching isn’t as tightly regulated. In fact, many of my students have built six-figure businesses and helped their clients achieve life-changing results—all without certifications.
Why? Because what your ideal clients care about most is results.
And how do you deliver those results? Through real-life practice.
That’s why I always recommend starting to coach as soon as possible.
Hands-on experience will teach you more than any certification ever could. The more you work with clients, the more skilled and confident you’ll become.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. Some health and mental health coaching niches do require certifications, so make sure you research your specific niche before you start coaching.
For example, a somatic nurse coach will need to fulfill certain criteria.
Now, if you decide that getting certified is the right path for you, make sure to choose a program accredited by a trusted organization. I’ll share the top four somatic coach certifications later in this guide.
But before we get to that, let’s talk about another essential piece of your success: Creating a coaching package that delivers real value to your clients.
3. Create and price a coaching package
If you want to deliver real value to your clients (and make your coaching easier to sell), you need to design a coaching package.
Start by thinking about the transformation you’re offering. What will your clients achieve by working with you?
Emotional healing? A deeper connection to themselves? Better leadership skills?
When you clearly highlight these benefits in your package, potential clients will understand exactly why they need your services.
Not sure how to price your services? A good starting point is a three-month program priced at $1,500.
As you gain more experience and collect testimonials, you can confidently raise your rates.

With your coaching package ready, it’s time for the next step: Finding paying clients.
4. Get your first clients
Getting your first clients can feel intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. In fact, with the right approach, it can be surprisingly simple.
Here are three proven ways to get started:
- Your network: Reach out to friends, family, and colleagues. Let them know what you’re doing and ask if they can refer you to anyone who might benefit from your coaching.
- Social media: Join online communities where your ideal clients spend time (such as TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Reddit). Engage by answering questions, sharing advice, and demonstrating the value of somatic coaching. The more visible and helpful you are, the more trust you’ll build.
- Podcasts: Pitch yourself to podcasts that your target audience listens to. Podcasts are a fantastic way to get noticed, share your expertise, and build credibility with potential clients.

Once you’ve landed your first client, your next step is delivering a transformational experience. Ready to learn how? Let’s cover that next.
5. Work with your client
Your main focus here? Helping your client achieve the results they came to you for.
The best way to ensure success is by setting clear, actionable goals right from the start.
Begin by asking your client what their main goal is, then break it down into manageable milestones. Take it a step further by dividing these milestones into smaller subgoals, which will become the focus of each coaching session.
This structured approach ensures every session moves your client closer to their larger transformation.
In somatic coaching, one thing matters above all else: Creating a safe, supportive space.
Your clients need to feel comfortable exploring emotions, sensations, and vulnerabilities. When they trust the process and the environment, they’re more likely to open up and experience deep healing.

Examples of somatic coaching sessions
What does somatic coaching look like in real life?
Here are three examples to show what your somatic coaching sessions might look like:
Example 1: Easing anxiety
- Problem: Your client feels anxious and tense, especially in social situations.
- Approach: Guide them to notice where anxiety shows up in their body and teach them how to release it.
- Techniques/exercises: Start with a body scan, helping them identify areas of tightness—like a tight chest or knotted stomach. Follow up with deep breathing to calm their nervous system and grounding techniques to restore balance.
- Results: Your client feels lighter, calmer, and more connected to their body. They leave the session with a simple practice to manage anxiety whenever it arises.
Example 2: Releasing trauma
- Problem: Your client feels stuck, carrying tension from unresolved trauma.
- Approach: Help them reconnect with their body to begin releasing stored emotions.
- Techniques/exercises: Use mindful movement and breathwork to help them notice where they feel blocked. Guide them to release tension with small, controlled movements. When intense emotions surface, provide a safe, supportive space for processing and use breathwork to keep them grounded.
- Results: Your client feels more at ease, as if a weight has been lifted. They’ve started to process long-held emotions and feel more in control.
Example 3: Boosting confidence
- Problem: Your client struggles with low confidence, which is holding them back in life.
- Approach: Empower them by helping them reconnect with their body in a positive way.
- Techniques/exercises: Begin with breathwork to ground them and incorporate body-awareness techniques to improve posture. Add visualization exercises where they picture themselves confidently facing challenges.
- Results: Your client leaves feeling more confident and capable of tackling life’s challenges head-on.
Now that you know what somatic coaching sessions look like, let’s talk about how to choose the right somatic coaching training to get started.
How to choose a certification
Thinking about getting certified but unsure which program is right for you?
Choosing the right somatic coach training is simpler than it seems. Just focus on these six key factors:
- Accreditation: Look for a program that’s backed by a trusted organization, like the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
- Reputation: Go for a certification with great reviews and positive feedback from past students.
- Cost: Make sure the program fits your budget while offering solid value for what you’ll learn.
- Length: Consider how much time you can commit. Does the program align with your schedule?
- Curriculum: Choose a certification that teaches the topics and skills you’re most excited to learn.
- Flexibility: Decide if you’d thrive in a self-paced program or prefer one with set class times and structure.
The best certification is the one that fits your needs, budget, and goals. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—what matters most is finding a program that works for you.

With these top programs in mind, you’re probably wondering: How much can you actually make as a somatic coach? Let’s break down the numbers next.
How much can a somatic coach make?
Wondering how much you can earn as a somatic coach? According to Glassdoor, the average salary for a somatic coach is $72,286/year.
But here’s the thing: That’s a salary figure. As a self-employed coach, you set your own rates, which means your earning potential can be much higher. Many of my clients in similar niches make six or multiple six figures.
Still, your earning potential depends on several factors:
- Experience: The more skilled and experienced you are, the more you can charge.
- Location: Rates often vary depending on where you live and work.
- Niche: Specializing in a high-demand area can significantly increase your earning potential.
So yes, it’s absolutely doable—with the right strategy.
Now that you know the earning potential, let’s tackle some other common questions about somatic coaching.
Frequently asked questions about somatic coaching
What are the benefits of somatic coaching?
Somatic coaching is a powerful approach for lasting personal growth. That’s because it gets clients in touch with whatever’s stored in their bodies. This can lead to reduced stress, healing from past traumas, improved emotional well-being, stronger relationships, and more self-awareness.
How much does a somatic coaching certification cost?
The cost varies widely, from $500 to over $20,000. Many ICF-accredited certifications, like the ones listed above, cost over $15,000. Prices depend on factors like program content, duration, reputation, and the level of support offered.
Can you be a somatic coach without a certification?
Yes! In most cases, you don’t need a certification to start coaching. What matters most is delivering results, which you’ll gain through real-life experience. That’s why my advice is to start coaching as soon as possible—you’ll build your skills faster and begin helping clients sooner.

And there you have it: Now you know how to become a somatic coach, and what the top somatic coach certifications are.
Starting a somatic coaching business is an amazing opportunity to transform lives — including your own.
But figuring everything out on your own feels overwhelming.
I know because I used to be there. I worked a busy 9-5 and tried building my own coaching business for a few years. Through trial and error and investing thousands of dollars, I didn’t seem to be able to figure it out.
Until something clicked and I grew my first coaching business to six figures in four months. Since then, I’ve helped thousands of people start their coaching businesses.
And I’ve packaged everything I’ve learned into a training program I wished would’ve existed when I first started out, Employee to Entrepreneur (ETE). ETE is a roadmap that gives you the structure and support you need to free up your time and make more money while doing meaningful work.
