What is a meditation coach?
A meditation coach helps people apply meditation practices to improve their lives.
If you have a strong meditation practice and feel rewarded by helping others achieve their goals, this could be the coaching niche for you.
Plus, studies show that meditation offers a wide range of benefits, including:
- Better emotional well-being
- Less stress
- Clearer focus
- Lower anxiety
- And improved sleep
As a meditation coach, you might work in a wellness center or studio. You could also run your business online.
By becoming an entrepreneur, you have the flexibility you need to build your business in a way that works for you and your students.
For example, Cristina de la Fuente — one of my students — is a leadership coach who uses meditation as part of her coaching philosophy. Through her business, Outsmarting Busyness, she works with leaders who want to achieve better communication skills, focus, and well-being.
What is the difference between a meditation coach and a meditation teacher?
Meditation coaching is not the same as teaching meditation. In fact, they have completely different approaches.
To summarize:
- Meditation coach: Helps clients develop their meditation practice and achieve specific goals. They take an individualized and collaborative approach to support them.
- Meditation teacher: Instructs students on meditation techniques, philosophy, and history in a structured way. They tend to use a set program that they teach to everyone.
In the next section, we’ll dive deeper into your main tasks as a meditation coach.
What does a meditation coach do?
As a meditation coach, you:
- Set goals: Meditation and well-being mean something different to everyone. So, you’ll help clients understand where they are in their practice and where they want to be.
- Provide guidance for individual goals: Using your knowledge of meditation practices and personal experience, you can give personalized advice based on your client’s needs.
- Offer accountability and support: Your clients count on you to hold them accountable to their daily meditation routines and mindset shifts. Through coaching sessions, you’ll help motivate your clients and support them through any setbacks.
- Help find a strategy to tackle challenges: As a coach, you’ll analyze and identify the challenges your client is facing and create a roadmap to solve them.
- Facilitate meditative practices: You can lead guided meditations and provide personalized materials for your client to use between sessions. You may also help clients learn new approaches to meditation that they may not be familiar with.
- Track results: During your coaching, you’ll perform check-ins to track your client’s progress.
Most meditation coaches deliver their services via video call, but you can also work with clients in person.
That’s the beauty of running your own coaching business — you decide when and where you work. For instance, I only put in up to 20 hours a week because while I love what I do, I have lots of other things I also want to do.

How to become a meditation coach in 6 steps
To become a meditation coach, you need to:
1. Find a niche
2. Improve your meditation coaching skills
3. Get certified
4. Create and price a coaching package
5. Get your first clients
6. Work with your clients
Let’s dive into each step.
1. Find a niche
You’re probably wondering: Isn’t meditation my coaching niche?
Well, meditation is part of it. But it’s a good idea to niche down even more.
Think of it this way: If you narrow your focus to a specific audience or approach, you become an expert in that field.
That way, you can market yourself as the best person to offer transformative coaching to the clients who need you the most.
So, how do you figure out your niche? Ask yourself the following:
- What experience do you have?
- Who do you want to help?
- How do you want to help them?
For example, you could:
- Help executives achieve better work-life balance with mindfulness meditation
- Encourage female entrepreneurs by building self-confidence through mantra meditations
- Support new moms so they can destress with breathing and walking meditation
Ultimately, your niche is at the intersection of your current skills and your audience’s goals.

2. Improve your meditation coaching skills
Even if you have lots of experience with meditation, it’s still a good idea to keep experimenting.
You’ll learn new techniques and styles, setting you apart from your competitors and creating a better value for your clients.
So, how do you improve your meditation knowledge? Here are some ideas:
- Follow thought leaders in the meditation space
- Read popular books on meditation
- Study the latest research
- Listen to mindfulness and meditation podcasts such as Ten Percent Happier
- Hire your own meditation coach or join a meditation studio
You can also improve your coaching skills by identifying your strengths and weaknesses. Work on them one at a time to become a better coach.
Another way? Getting certified.
3. Get certified
You don’t need a certification to become a meditation coach.
Clients care about the results you help them achieve — not your qualifications.
However, you can get certified.
And if you want to work in a wellness center or meditation studio, they may require it.
Meditation coaching certifications do vary in length and price, though, so keep that in mind.
💡Tip: Make sure you choose a certification program from a trusted organization.
But we’ll talk more about meditation coaching certifications a little later.
Next up: Creating your first coaching package.
4. Create and price a coaching package
Your coaching package is the foundation of your offer. So what should it include?
Start with a 3-month package. That gives you enough time to help your client achieve great results.
Over those three months, you can have weekly or bi-monthly coaching calls — 45 minutes to an hour is enough. Plus, you can offer texting or Voxer support in between calls to make your clients feel even more supported.
Because that’s the goal here — you want your clients to feel looked after. They want to know you’re there for them and will help them achieve their goals.
So, here’s a Luisa-ism for you: Overdeliver. And once you’ve done that, deliver some more.
Now, let’s think about pricing.
Having coached many new coaches in starting their businesses, I know how scary it can be to put a price tag on your services.
My advice? Keep it simple.
Price your 3-month package at $1,500.
This price point is high enough to attract clients who are serious about achieving their goals but also low enough for even a beginner coach to charge.
As you work with more clients, you can raise your prices.
A six-figure income is totally possible as a coach. But take it step by step.

5. Get your first clients
Want to make marketing your meditation coaching business way easier?
Remember this: Focus on getting ONE client using ONE strategy.
Why?
Because it’s a tangible, manageable goal — even if you’re currently juggling a 9-5.
So, where do you find your first client?
Here are some proven marketing strategies:
- Reach out to your network: The easiest way to find clients is to talk to your friends, family, and colleagues. There might be someone interested in working with you.
- Guest host on podcasts: Appearing on industry podcasts helps you expand your audience and build a solid reputation.
- Post on social media: By publishing high-quality content aimed at your audience, you attract potential customers. This is how I grew my business to seven figures in less than a year.
It can take time to secure your first client, but don’t give up!
Ignore distractions like optimizing your website or creating a fancy logo and focus on the strategies that work.
If you’re consistent, you’ll have your first client deposit soon.
👋And I say high five to that👋
6. Work with your clients
Your clients hire you for one thing: Transformation. In other words, they want you to help them achieve specific goals.
So, your meditation coaching could help clients with:
- Creating a consistent meditation routine
- Improving their self-worth with mantras
- Implementing meditation practices for better sleep
After helping your client define their goals at the beginning, you’ll create a path to get there. During coaching sessions, you’ll guide your clients toward achieving those results.

So, how do you hold powerful coaching sessions?
Here’s a framework:
- Recap: Establish what you discussed in your previous session or first sales call
- Connect: Start your session with a quick guided meditation to set the tone
- Guide: Provide clear guidance on any challenges your client may have and keep them accountable if resistance comes up
- Plan: Outline steps to tackle the next hurdle
In other words, approach your coaching from a structured, supportive place to help your client create real results.
Now, let’s talk about the best meditation coaching certification programs in case you’re still interested in pursuing one.
