“How long does it take to build a coaching business?”
It’s one of the most common questions I get—and for good reason. Coaching is one of the best businesses out there: you get to help people transform their lives and get paid well for it.
But most new coaches give up before they ever get there.
After helping 4,000+ people start and grow their coaching businesses, I’ve seen exactly how long it takes to go from zero clients… to six figures and beyond.
Let’s break it down step by step.

👋 Who am I? I’m Luisa Zhou, a business coach who’s helped 4,000+ coaches start and grow profitable businesses. My work has been featured in Forbes, Business Insider, and more. With 10+ years of hands-on experience (and mistakes you don’t have to make), I created this guide to help you start smarter. Read more!
How long it takes to build a coaching business
Over the years of working with thousands of clients, here are the clear patterns I’ve spotted:
- It often takes 3-6 months to land your first paying client
- Within 12-24 months, some coaches replace their 9-5 income or hit their first 6-figure year

I grew my first coaching business to six figures in four months. Here’s how:
But your timeline might look different.
Because before I ever started that business, I had already gone through years of trial and error. And I had built businesses for a decade.
That’s the key: your timeline depends on you.
For example, if you have kids, you’ll have less time. And if you’ve got a demanding job, your hours are also more limited.
That said, if you’ve got a proven roadmap—like my Employee to Entrepreneur program (ETE)—you can shorten the learning curve dramatically.
ETE is a program I built to teach the exact steps I, and thousands of my clients, have taken to build our coaching businesses without uncertainty and overwhelm.
To get results like this a lot faster:

Speaking of “shortcuts”, let’s look at what else speeds up your success.
What drives (and accelerates) a coaching business timeline?
Five big factors influence how quickly your coaching business will grow.
Let’s break each one down together.

1. Niche and positioning
Step one? Pick the right niche.
The clearer you are on who you help with what, the faster you’ll get traction. Because when you have a clear niche, clients know exactly how you can help them.
Plus, you’ll be able to offer expert advice instead of staying surface-level.
Here, it’s important to pick something that:
- You know well
- Is in demand
Doing a little market research helps you find that sweet spot. Go to online forums where your clients hang out and talk to them.
Want the simplest way to define your niche? In this video, I share the ONE sentence you need to do so:
Figured out your niche? Then it’s time to think about your marketing strategy.
2. Marketing strategy
The best ways to find your very first clients ASAP are:
- Tapping into your network (this is usually the fastest option)
- Getting on relevant podcasts
- Cultivating genuine relationships on social media
Now, a common mistake I see new coaches make is trying to do everything at once.
They spread themselves thin across a dozen strategies, and the result is burnout and very little to show for it.
Instead, focus on one marketing strategy and master it before adding anything else.
That’s what leads to faster results and sustainable growth. I built my own business on just one channel: Facebook. I first mastered Facebook groups, then created my own, and finally leveraged Facebook ads.
I had crossed multiple seven figures when I diversified and created a YouTube channel, Instagram account, and a blog.
However, while I built my business on Facebook, this is just one platform – and the one that works best for you depends on your audience. These days platforms like TikTok and Reddit are some of the best channels to build momentum fast.
3. Available resources
Your time, money, and experience all impact how quickly you can grow your business.
Part of the reason I was able to build mine so fast was my personal situation: I had no kids to take care of, and my now husband worked a demanding job.
That gave me more time to focus fully on my business, even though I was working a demanding 9-5.
But you don’t need endless hours.
Many of my clients build their businesses as a side hustle, and that’s exactly what I recommend. By starting on the side, you don’t have to worry about your income right away, which takes a lot of pressure off.

If you stay consistent, just one hour a day plus a few hours on weekends is enough to make real progress.

4. Mindset
A lot of people see me today and assume I was an overnight success. But I can tell you that that’s far from true.
No coaching business is built overnight.
The people who succeed aren’t necessarily innovative geniuses, either. They’re simply the ones who keep showing up.
That means:
- Taking action instead of staying stuck in overthinking
- Documenting your processes so you can streamline and automate them later on
- Developing a “growth mindset” and using rejections as learning opportunities
This mindset shift alone can shave months off your timeline.
I talk more about how to leverage rejection in this video:
5. Support systems
Many of my clients tell me that once they joined my program, ETE, everything clicked.
They finally stop wasting time on things that don’t matter and focus on what actually works.
That’s what great mentorship and coaching can do for you.
And it’s exactly why I built my Employee to Entrepreneur program. I took everything I learned and turned it into a clear step-by-step system, so you don’t have to spend years trying to piece it together on your own.
Plus, you get access to program coaches who help you every step of the way.

Example timelines
So, let’s go back to the question: How long does it take to build a coaching business?
Here are the two typical paths I see:
Path A: Organic side hustle
With this path, you work one to two hours a day during the week and add a few extra hours on weekends.
This is the path most of my clients take, allowing them to leave behind their 9-5 within one to three years.
This is how my client Ruby, a relationship coach, went from no experience at all to leaving her job within seven months.

Path B: Accelerated launch
Here, you can often count on prior experience.
This is the path I took for my coaching business, and it lets you replace your 9-5 income within four to twelve months.
However, while I was able to leverage my experience, I also juggled my day job, so I didn’t have unlimited time. I spent 45 minutes every workday and a few hours over the weekend on sales-generating activities like creating social media posts.

Neither path is better than the other. It just depends on your current situation and what’s realistic for you.

FAQs: How long does it take to build a coaching business?
How long does it take to land my first coaching client?
You can land your first client in as little as 30–60 days if you focus on the right things. Instead of spending months building a website or logo, start by talking to people. The fastest path is learning how to connect with potential clients and make clear offers that solve their problems.
Can I build my coaching business part-time while working full-time?
Yes, and I recommend it. Most of my clients build their coaching business on the side before going full-time. Working part-time on your business lets you build income and confidence first. Even 5–10 focused hours per week is enough to make real progress.
When can I quit my day job?
Don’t quit too early. Build a stable business before quitting your 9-5. A good rule of thumb is to quit when you’ve doubled your salary so that you can cover taxes and costs without stress.
Is coaching profitable?
Yes, coaching can be incredibly profitable. It has low startup costs and high margins because you can monetize your existing skills. Once you know how to attract clients and price your services right, you can build a six-figure or even multi-six-figure business with very few expenses. Many coaches later scale through group programs, online courses, and digital products.
What percentage of coaching businesses fail?
There’s no exact statistic, but many estimates show that over 80% of new coaching businesses struggle to stay profitable. But most coaches don’t fail because coaching doesn’t work, but because they never learn how to market and sell their services. If you master client acquisition, you’re already in the top 10–20% of coaches who actually succeed.
