How Much Does It Cost to Start a Coaching Business in 2025?

On this page

On this page

After working with thousands of new coaches, I’ve seen people spend anywhere from $100 to $10,000 to start their coaching businesses.

The difference in how much someone spends to become a coach depends on whether they get certified and what type of coaching they offer – but far from all costs are necessary.

Want to know what you should (and shouldn’t) spend your money on?

Starting a coaching business can cost as little as $677 and have a 90% profit margin. Typically, new coaches spend anywhere from $100-$10,000 to get started, depending on certification and marketing costs.

The top coaching business startup cost categories

One huge advantage of starting a coaching business?

Low startup costs. You don’t need inventory, a storefront, or even a team (at least initially). On average, coaches make $234/hour and most of that income is profit.

Plus, there’s a HUGE demand for coaches.

According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the industry generated $5.34 billion in 2025 alone

With that said, how much does it actually cost to start a coaching business

There are two cost categories: One-off and recurring costs.

While some costs (like renting office space) can vary, this will give you a rough idea of what to expect:

Comparison chart of one-off and recurring costs to start a coaching business, including legal fees, contracts, software, hosting, certification, and optional expenses like branding or insurance.

One-time setup costs

The main mandatory one-time setup costs are legal fees, starting with legal entity costs. (For most coaches, you won’t have to spend more than $200.)

First, you need to set up your business. The two most common options are:

  • Sole proprietorship: The easiest and cheapest choice, but you’re not protected if you have business debts or get sued. Cost: Free if you operate under your legal name. But check with the IRS to learn what forms to fill out.
  • LLC (Limited Liability Company): Requires more paperwork and expense, but offers more legal protection. Cost: $50 to $1,000+ per year.

For most coaches, a sole proprietorship is a great way to get started. Once you have a few paying clients, you can invest in forming an LLC.

Besides setting up a legal entity, you’ll want a coaching contract to protect you and your clients.

For this step, you can:

  1. Buy a template from a coaching platform or legal service
    • Cost: Approximately $100–$400
  2. Get a custom contract from a lawyer
    • Cost: Approximately $500–$1,000

A template reviewed by a lawyer is usually enough. For example, my friend Lisa Fraley, a legal coach, offers legal contract templates for coaches. But there are also other services like LegalZoom.

Optional costs

Once the legal side of your business is set up, there are other costs to think about, depending on your business plan and objectives.

The main ones are:

Certifications and training

The truth is, certifications are optional as a coach in most cases.

That’s why this is a completely optional cost. You don’t really need one to get clients either; plenty of my own clients and myself don’t have certifications or degrees. However, I have 10+ years of experience in my field.

That said, there are some niches that require certification – mainly in the health and financial coaching spaces. For example, if you act as a nutritionist or give investment advice, you often need a degree or certification.

You can also choose to get certified. In that case, certifications often cost $500-$10,000+.

A website

Your website is another optional cost because you don’t need a website as a new coach. I didn’t have one myself until I had hit $20,000 in sales!

If any potential clients ask you for one, you can direct them to your LinkedIn or Instagram profile.

And even when you set one up, use a simple setup like a WordPress or a Squarespace website.

Once you create one, here’s a quick breakdown of costs:

  • Domain: $20/year
  • Hosting and website template: $10–$30/month
  • Website builder: $23–$99+/month
  • Custom site:  $5,000+

Recurring costs

You will have some monthly costs – even if coaching doesn’t require a lot of them. The most important ones are:

  • Zoom (calls), Calendly (call scheduler) and Google Workspace (email): Approximately $50-60 per month
  • Hosting, maintenance, and security: $20–$100
  • Marketing: Budget 3-10% of projected revenue

Optional recurring costs:

  • Staff or contractors (VA, designer): $25–$100+/hour
  • Branding, design, photography: $500–$3,000+
  • Membership & professional fees: $50–$600+/year
  • Liability insurance: $200–$1,500/year
  • Emergency fund/reserve: six months of living expenses
  • Physical office: $500–$3,000/month to rent or $20k–$250k+ to buy

Note: These costs come later. When you have a few clients, you can start looking into branding and outsourcing. Before then, focus on getting coaching clients and growing your revenue.

Realistic budget scenarios

So, how much should you budget for your business?

The only costs you need to get started are essentials: Zoom, Calendly, and a legal contract. Don’t spend money on marketing at this point – use free channels like social media or your own network.

Legal template: $397

Tools: $280/year

Total budget: $677

Infographic showing the minimum cost to start a coaching business is $677, including basic tools and a legal contract.

With a mid-range budget of $3,000–$8,000, you can get a coaching certification (if you want one), a website, insurance, and tools like client management and email marketing software.

If you’re ready to scale quickly and can invest $10,000–$25,000+, you can also get strategic branding, hire a VA, and use ads to set yourself up for success from the beginning.

But once you’ve invested in your business, how fast can you except a return on your investment? Let’s find out!

ROI and profitability timeline

Coaching businesses can have profit margins of 90% if you operate online and don’t have contractors or office space.

That’s what makes coaching such a powerful business model – no other business model lets you get started as quickly and make as high profits.

And what you do spend early on can be recouped quickly with just a handful of clients.

Example: If you charge $1,500 for three months of coaching (a good starting point) you’d just need 1 client to cover basic startup costs.

In my case, I invested about $42,200 initially and hit $106,000 in sales (note: I spent way more than you have to – or should, if you’re a brand new coach), so my profit margin was over 60%.

A big chunk of that spend actually went into coaching and learning from others. To help others get results faster without spending as much as I did, I created my program Employee to Entrepreneur (ETE), which packages all my learnings into one program!

Key numbers for ROI

To calculate your profit, you need to know a few key numbers:

Must-know numbers:

  • Revenue: The total money you’ve brought in
  • Expenses: Your total costs
  • Profit margin: What’s left over after you subtract expenses
  • Break-even point: The amount of revenue you need to cover all your costs

Good-to-know numbers:

To calculate your ROI:

Take your net profit (revenue – expenses) and divide it by your expenses. Then multiply by 100 to get your ROI as a percentage.

Here’s the formula:

ROI = (profit ÷ investment) × 100

For example, if you spent $1,000 and landed $5,000 in sales, your ROI is:

($5,000 – $1,000) ÷ $1,000 × 100 = 400% ROI.

Now you know your costs and how to calculate your ROI. But how do you set up your business?

Here’s how.

FAQs: How much does it cost to start a coaching business?

Is a coaching business expensive to start?

No, a coaching business is actually one of the lowest-cost businesses you can start. Unlike other businesses, you don’t need inventory, a storefront, or a big team. Many new coaches get started for under $1,000 by using free tools, organic marketing, and a simple coaching package.

What’s the average cost to start a coaching business?

On average, most coaches spend between $100 and $5,000 to start their businesses. Just focusing on essential basic tools (Calendly and Zoom) and a legal contract can keep your total costs under $1,000. If you choose certification or custom branding, your budget could reach $10,000 or more.

What’s the cheapest way to start a coaching business?

The cheapest way is to start as a sole proprietor and use free tools like Zoom, Google Docs, and Calendly to schedule calls. Market your business using organic channels like social media or your personal network. You can cover these costs with just one client.

What are the hidden costs of coaching businesses?

The biggest hidden costs of coaching businesses are software creep (you sign up for too many subscriptions that you don’t really need) and marketing spend. Other costs are professional fees and using your own time in unproductive ways.

Are coaching businesses profitable?

Yes, coaching businesses can have a 90% profit margin thanks to high-ticket packages and low costs. But like any business, profitability depends on factors like pricing and costs. However, many coaches reach six figures in yearly revenue so this industry has lots of potential.

Is certification mandatory?

No, certifications are optional in most coaching niches. Some niches (like executive or health coaching) may benefit from it, but many coaches succeed without certification. If you choose to get certified, certification costs are often between $500 and $10,000, depending on the program.

Do I need an LLC to start a coaching business?

No, you can start as a sole proprietor. An LLC becomes useful later for legal protection and tax benefits once you’re earning consistent income.

How much should I charge for coaching?

A good starting point is around $1,500 for a 3-month coaching package. From there, raise your rates as you get more experience and help your clients get results. Many established coaches charge $3,000–$10,000+ per package.

How do I get high-paying coaching clients?

High-paying clients come from positioning yourself as an expert, creating packages that solve specific problems, and using marketing strategies that build trust (like content marketing and referrals).

What type of coaching is most in demand?

Right now, niches like career coaching, executive coaching and health and wellness coaching are in high demand. However, the “best” niche is the one where you can solve a specific, pressing problem for your target audience.
